## When caring for others leaves little space for your own health

Healthcare jobs may involve unpredictable shifts, emotional intensity, administrative burden, and repeated exposure to other people's distress. Over time, some workers notice exhaustion, irritability, detachment, poor sleep, or a sense that they have less to give. These experiences deserve attention, whether or not they meet criteria for a specific medical diagnosis.

The CDC emphasizes that burnout risk is connected to working conditions, not merely an individual's ability to cope. Short staffing, limited control over schedules, and insufficient support can contribute. Self-care can help some people, but it should not replace organizational changes or appropriate health care when those are needed.

## Check in with yourself beyond the end of a shift

You can jot down brief answers for your own use. The goal is to identify patterns without turning the exercise into another task to get perfectly right.

-

What changed first: sleep, patience, concentration, enthusiasm, appetite, or connection with others?

-

Does the stress decrease meaningfully between shifts or follow you into days off and family life?

-

Are you using caffeine, alcohol, or other substances differently to get through the week?

-

Have coworkers or family noticed changes that concern you?

-

What workplace support, schedule adjustment, or personal support is realistically available?

## When burnout language may not explain everything

Symptoms such as persistent hopelessness, marked loss of pleasure, anxiety, or trouble functioning outside work may warrant assessment for depression or other conditions. The same is true for sleep problems that affect safety or daily functioning. A professional evaluation can consider occupational stress alongside medical, mental health, and medication-related causes.

You do not have to choose between addressing a difficult workplace and talking with a mental health professional. Both may matter. If a workplace is unsafe or harmful, individual treatment should not be framed as a substitute for necessary workplace protections.

## A few questions to bring to an appointment

A focused conversation can begin with practical questions rather than a diagnosis.

-

How might shift work and irregular sleep affect this assessment?

-

Which symptoms suggest additional medical or mental health evaluation?

-

What treatment options, including psychotherapy or medication when appropriate, might be considered?

-

How will we evaluate whether the plan is helping without assuming my work situation can change overnight?

## Exploring care in El Paso or through Texas telehealth

At Her Mind & Wellness, Elizabeth Ghadimi, PMHNP-BC, provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management when appropriate for adults. The practice offers in-person visits in El Paso and telehealth when you are physically in Texas. The website's care options explain insurance through Headway, self-pay requests, and the option of a free 15-minute introductory conversation. Availability, eligibility, and appointments still require confirmation.

If you are a healthcare worker worried that seeking help will be judged, you can ask about the clinical process and confidentiality before sharing personal details. General website contact forms are for scheduling, not for sending sensitive clinical histories.

This article is educational and cannot diagnose, replace personal medical advice, or direct treatment. Do not change prescribed medication because of a web page. For suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis, call or text 988 in the United States. For immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911. A website appointment request is not an emergency service.
